Vacuum Pipework Specification

Vacuum Pipework Specification

It is important that the correct materials are used for the vacuum pipework in dental applications. Due to the chemicals required to clean and disinfect suction systems it is important that the pipework can withstand these chemicals.

Generally ABS pipework is used because it is low cost and readily available from all hardware stores. However, in the long run it can prove very costly if floors have to be taken up to replace broken pipework and fittings.

We advise if you are planning a surgery or replacing pipework to instruct the plumber / build team to use MuPVC.

HTM 2022 - Supplement 1

4.45 The vacuum and exhaust lines should comprise materials resistant to attack from substances carried and be so constructed as to withstand a negative pressure of 25 kPa. Pipework made from ABS/ASA material are generally found to be unsuitable as they will suffer chemical attack. Copper pipes will be attacked by dental amalgam if used in wet systems.

4.46 Polyethylene, polypropylene and heat-welded uPVC have all been found suitable

Here are a few examples we have found where ABS pipework was used.
